CALL TO ARTISTS: SURREAL SALON 7 thaxton October 13, 2014 ART, EVENTS Baton Rouge Gallery, center for contemporary art, just announced it is now accepting submissions for Surreal Salon 7, a national juried exhibition of pop-surrealist and lowbrow art from across America. Artists interested in being a part of this unique and exciting exhibition can find more information here. Presented by Baton Rouge Gallery center for contemporary art (BRGCCA), Surreal Salon 7 is aimed at once again engaging audiences in a multi-sensory art experience like no other in the region by shedding light on the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. Submissions will be reviewed via a blind jurying process that will ensure that works are selected based solely on their artistic merit (the juror will not see an artist’s name, resume or contact information). Over the years, Baton Rouge Gallery has prided itself in enlisting well-known and well-respected jurors for Surreal Salon – including the co-founder of Juxtapoz Magaine, Greg Escalante, for Surreal Salon Six – to assist in making Surreal Salon as artistically successful as possible. That tradition is once again improved upon in 2015 with one of pop-surrealism’s most recognizable and iconic artists, Shag (Josh Agle), serving as Special Guest Juror. He will personally select each work to be included in the exhibition. Shag has had nine art books published and had successful solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia. In a 2002 review of Shag’s show at Manhattan’s Earl McGrath Gallery, The New York Times said, “the eye is snared by Mr. Agle’s economic use of saturated colors — sharp greens and warm lavenders, smoldering reds, sour ochers — and the tinted-gel space created by his thin-on-thin paint handling.” The reviewer went on to describe his works as “pulsating furnaces of color.” The artist and his work was also the subject of the 2007 documentary, “The Sophisticated Misfit” (a trailer for which can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77EBvBSObSU). More information about Shag can be found at http://www.shag.com/. This exhibition will be held from January 4-29, 2015 at BRGCCA (located inside the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish’s (“BREC”) historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Dr.). During the show’s run, it will be open to the public, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (Tuesday-Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.). The work selected by the exhibition’s juror as “Best in Show” for Surreal Salon 7 will be prominently featured in an editorial on the exhibition that will be seen by millions the world over in an upcoming issue of Juxtapoz Magazine. The artist’s work will appear (with title and medium listed) and will be recognized as “Best in Show” for Surreal Salon 7. On Saturday, January 25, 2013, BRGCCA will host The Seventh Annual Surreal Salon Soiree, a costumed event in honor of Surreal Salon 7, from 7 – 11 p.m. This will be an exciting evening of visual art, live musical performances, surrealist games and hundreds of costumed attendees channeling their own pop-surrealist visions. The event will be held at BRGCCA.
